Quick Fruit Jam

Food & Dining

Making jam doesn’t have to involve boiling fruit on the stove or cups of added sugar. In fact, this jam only contains two ingredients. This quick fruit jam lets the fruit of your choice be the star.

The second ingredient in this quick fruit jam is chia seeds. These tiny but mighty seeds are low in calories but packed with fiber, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. Chia seeds have even been shown to promote weight loss, regulate blood sugar and reduce inflammation.

When submerged in liquid, chia seeds become thick and gelatinous. This is why they are commonly mixed with water and used to replace eggs when baking or cooking vegan recipes. In this quick fruit jam recipe, the fruit acts as the liquid. When mixed with the chia seeds, the fruit becomes a more jelly-like consistency.

Start with whatever fruit you’d like. It can be fresh or frozen. If using frozen, allow the fruit to thaw in the fridge before using in this recipe. Our favorites are mango and blueberry.

This recipe only requires two ingredients, fruit and chia seeds. If you find your jam isn’t quite sweet enough, you could add coconut sugar, agave, or maple syrup to make it sweet enough for your taste.

Feeling a little bit gourmet? Add another level of flavor to your jam by adding chopped herbs or fruit zest. Try finely chopped basil, mint, thyme, or sage.  Lime, lemon, or orange zest also work beautifully in this recipe.

This quick fruit jam is delicious using simply fruit and chia seeds. But here are some fun flavor combinations to try: strawberry and basil, peach and thyme, blueberry with lemon zest, mixed berry (raspberry, blueberry, blackberry), mango & orange zest.

1 c fruit

1 tbsp chia seeds

  1. Smash fruit into a pulp with a fork, potato masher, or use a food processor. If the fruit isn’t very juicy you may have to add a bit of water to thin it out.
  2. Stir in chia seeds.
  3. Refrigerate jam until set, about 1 hour.

Jam should be kept in an air-tight container and lasts up to a week in the fridge.
