My husband and I are leaving on Oct. 2 for a week at the Atlantis. I am now worried about all the hurricane and tropical storm activity, and am afraid we'll have to cancel. From the weather reports, it looks like all will be fine moving into October, but who knows. I just thought if I could get in touch with someone who lives there he or she could tell me whether or not it's a good idea to go the first week of October. Also, is there a web site where I could see specific weather reports for Nassau? Weather.com doesn't have what I'm looking for. Thank you!

As I understand it, from speaking with several guests at Atlantis, except for the time that Hurricane Frances was actually pounding the islands of New Providence and Paradise Island, the guests at Atlantis were really not disrupted that much.

I should add that, in between these weekly hurricanes, the weather here has been wonderful.

Today, for instance, it is sunny, blue skies and about 90 degrees.

I honestly would not change my vacation plans, if I were you, as I think after Jeanne passes, this weekend, we will be in for a nice streak of our normally excellent weather.

As far as acccurate weather forecasts for the Bahamas goes, you may want to check out the NEW Bahamas Weather website. It is the best weather resource in the country.

GREAT! I feel lots better. This will be our first trip to the Bahamas and we cannot wait.

I am envious that you are living and working in such a beautiful place - especially in the Internet field, which I am as well!

Take care and thanks again -
Leslie

p.s. Do you know anything about the person-to-person program? I have sent an inquiry for more information but have not heard from them yet. Thx!

How has the Bahamas survived tropical storm Katrina? We will be arriving in late October for a stay at Harborside/Paradise Island and I am curious to know if we should cancel our plans.
Thanks.

If you are referring to Katrina, it is already well beyond the Bahamas.

There was no damage in Nassau at all.

There are currently NO active tropical storms in the North Atlantic basin, so "come on down"!!!

Dspite the storms, Paradise Island, and all of Nassau/New Providence for the matter, has remained literally unscathed by the storms.

It is still hurricane season so we are not completely in the clear, but for right now, there is no cause for concern.

A light windbreaker is always good to pack. It can get windy on the beach in the evening, or if you are out on a boat at night.

Other than during hurricanes, rain in The Bahamas usually lasts only a short time and is nice and warm. I live here and don't even own a raincoat. :)

We are planning to stay at the Atlantis from Oct.21-25. It looks like Hurricane Wilma may be in the vicinity during this time. What's the word down there and should we be thinking about canceling? Thanks a bunnch.

One should be careful to verify what is posted here regarding damage and storms in the Bahamas.

In my 30 years of travel agency experience, it is not unheard of for an entity, media source or government of a country which derives nearly all of its revenues from TOURISM, to shade the truth in such matters.

Do not rely on the opinions of those who promote tourism somewhere as the sole source of your information about what is happening there.

Your comments are accurate... almost.

When I (Admin) post something on this message board, it is about as honest as anyone could be. I do not promote the Bahamas or tourism, nor do I make any money from it. In fact, many people consider this site to be too tough on the Bahamas. We like to think of it as being honest.

Fact is, Wilma had no effect on Nassau/Paradise Island. It briefly lowered the temperature (to around 70 degrees F) and brought some sporadic rain. Nothing that would suggest a vacation postponement. It is currently warm and sunny on Paradise Island.

Thanks for your comments.

I can verify that..
We had some wind and harsh tides, but that's about it. Even our boat, which was on dry dock and unprotected, was not affected.

Freeport's West End was hit badly once again.
They even lost a child in the storm, but Nassau has gone unscathed.
