Hello, we are planning our first trip to the Bahamas this December, and instead of staying in an impersonal hotel or casino monstrosity, would rather find a quiet bed and breakfast or private hotel near or in the city center. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I would recommend the following hotels:

Comfort Suites - Paradise Island
Cozy and comfortable, personalized attention and access to the water playground at Atlantis.

Bay View Village - Paradise Island
Vacation rentals offer the excitement of Paradise Island without the bustle of the big resorts.

British Colonial Hilton - Nassau
Small, intimate hotel with an excellent location in the heart of downtown Nassau. Has it's own private beach on Nassau harbour. Walking distance to historic sites, duty-free shopping and Nassau's Straw Market.

Nettie's Place - Casuarinas
Small hotel located on Cable Beach (Nassau) with access to the best beach on New Providence Island. Very inexpensive, no-frills hotel with excellent service and down-home hospitality.

There is also an excellent B&B called Dillet's Guest House just outside downtown Nassau.
