My fiancee and I are planning a trip for early May and until we saw the recent articles about the violent crime, were set on staying on Cat Island for a week. Is this still safe? What else is happening on the island that is of concern?

Cat Island is absolutely safe. The one violent crime on the island (in years) made such big headlines specifically because it is so rare there.

It is like in any small town anywhere. An incidence of violence shocks the entire community (and rightfully so).

I wouldn't worry about a thing. You will have a great time and I can honestly think of no concerns other than possible sunburn (so bring your lotion). :)

May 1, 2005 Just returned from 10 wonderful days on Cat Island. Our second trip. Traveled length and breadth of Island. Met only friendly, helpful and cheery people. Best beach I ever saw and fairly priced. One of the best bets in the Bahamas. Stayed at Greenwood Beach resort on the Atlantic side. Give them a look at Greenwoodbeachresort.com. Great snorkeling and diving. If you don't go, you really missed it!!

I am an American who has visited Cat Island each year for the past three years and plan to return there again this month. I can honestly say that I have found the Cat Islanders to be some the friendliest people I have ever meet. Additionally, I fear more for my safety living in small-town USA (with daily reports of multiple murders) than while visiting Cat Island. However, I suggest you hop on over and discover for yourself the absolute tranquility that can be found there. I am certain that you too will become a repeat visitor also.

I am looking to buy some property in the Bahamas. After reading about Cutlass Bay I am wondering if it is safe for an American to own property there. I can't afford to have my house or plane set on fire. Any advise?
