Bahamas Vacation and Travel page. We are planning to go next month. 2 adults four kids 17,17,15 and12. How is this hotel and beach? How safe is the island for the three older ones on their own? Is the food real expensive?

Bahamas Vacation and Travel page. The Wyndham Resort, Nassau, is an excellent choice. With 4 kids, you will especially appreciate all the Wyndham has to offer in the way of facilities and activities.
You should have no real concern for the safety of your older teens, even wandering about on their own, as long as they use common sense and stick to the many tourist areas of Nassau.
Food is a bit pricey but there are plenty of inexpensive restaurants like; The Reggae Cafe, Cafe Johnny Canoe's, Conch Fritters and Crocodiles, just to name a few. Bahamas Vacation and Travel page. How much does it cost to cross the Paradise Island bridge? Can you walk or must you drive? Also, can one spend the day at the atlantis beach or is it private? I know all their pools are off limits, but was wondering about the beach. I thought it might be nice to see the hotel spend the day at the beach. A nice change for a day.

We've been the Freeport (amazing place). Nassau sounds just as wonderful.
Can anyone help plan a few days? Are there any links to "things to do"?
Also, how much can I expect the cab ride to be from the airport to the Wyndham?

How much does it cost to cross the Paradise Island bridge?
One dollar. Bahamian and US money are interchangeable. You can walk over the bridge but I believe you still have to pay the buck.
can one spend the day at the atlantis beach or is it private?
The beach, Cabbage Beach, is open to the public, as are most beaches in The Bahamas. But getting access to those "public" beaches is sometimes difficult. The entire beach area behind Atlantis is difficult to get to by land, unless you walk through their guests-only area, and access by boat is not possible due to the shallow water.
But, just down the beach from Atlantis is the rest of Cabbage beach, which is every bit as beautiful as the area behind the resort.
Near the eastern end of the island is a public path, albeit rather crude, that leads directly to the beach; a mile or two of powder white sand and super clear turquoise water.
It is definitely worth your time to check out Atlantis. You can tour the spacious public areas of the hotels, browse the shops and check out thier many fantastic restaurants. You can also take a tour of the ruins of Atlantis (fabricated, but very cool) and if you are one of the lucky ones you can buy a day pass (if available) to venture further into their amazing complex. how much can I expect the cab ride to be from the airport to the Wyndham?
About $10-15 depending on the route the cab driver takes and whether they turn on their meter, which they are supposed to do by law, but few do.
Rather, most cabbies just cut a deal with you and if you're happy, they're happy.

Cable Beach and Paradise Island look pretty far on the map. Is it walkable? Or should we taxi it?

Cable Beach and Paradise Island look pretty far on the map. Is it walkable? Or should we taxi it?

Bahamas Vacation and Travel page. Cable beach is not walking distance to Atlantis. Take a taxi or the #10 bus downtown. Get on a ferry and to over to paradise island. Then you have to walk about 8 city blocks to get there.
Not to sound negative, but we did that and felt like we wasted our entire day. It was very dissapointing at Atlantis. We did not have a room there, therefore, you could not go anywhere except the casino, shopping area, and right outside the resturant. They have security everywhere and will not let you pass without a room key. They were very rude about it too. It is so commercialized and did not feel like the Bahamas at all.
You will love Cable beach. We stayed at the Nassau Beach Hotel and it was wonderful. Teens can run back and forth between the NBH and the Wyndam. Take a snorkle and mask and snorkle the rocks between these 2 hotels. You will see about 50 different types of fish life there. If you go on a snorkeling trip, go on Flying Cloud. It is by far the best on the island. We went on Stuart's Cove also, after Flying Cloud, and were not impressed with it except that we got to snorkle with the sharks.
One place you have to go is the Daq. Shack right across the street from the Wyndam. They have the best drinks of the 2 islands by far. $5 for non-al. and $6 for alcoholic. They use all real fruit, no juices, etc. Andy also plays the best music on the island.

I do not think it is fair to criticize Atlantis for looking out after their guests, who are paying (and receiving) an excellent vacation experience at one of the top vacation destinations in the world.
Please remember, there are, on any given day, up to 6,000 cruise ship visitors in Nassau. If Atlantis were to open their doors to the public, even at a price, there would be no room left for their paying visitors. I'll bet they'd get a lot of complaints about that.
I do not think Disneyworld, or any top-level vacation destination in the world allows non-guests to wander their property unrestricted.
If you want to experience all that Atlantis has to offer, it is very easy... simply book a room there (if they are not booked solid).
As for their employees being rude. In 7 years of almost daily contact with the staff at Atlantis I have NEVER encountered a rude employee, even when I was doing things that could have warranted rude behaviour; like smoking in a non-smoking area (I didn't know it was non-smoking) and touring the forbidden area without a pass (I just wandered in, sort of by accident). Thank you very much for the reply. I appreciate the long post. If time allows, I may wander over to Paradise Island for a look see ... but it looks like there's plenty of things to do at Cable Beach. Thanx again.
