I'm a Bahamian making my mark abroad before going back home. I'm always happy to see the islands of the Bahamas being developed for tourism purposes. However, growing up, I hated going to Mayaguana to visit my grand parents because of how underdeveloped the island was/is. I'm 27-years-old now, and Mayaguana has not much improved since then. It wasn't until the 90's Mayaguana finally got electricity! If I'm not mistaken, it was the last island to do so. Why is Mayaguana the last island to receive any form of aid or improvements from the government? Shouldn't every island, in some way, reap the benefits of our prosperous country? Is Mayaguana the forgotten island?

I am not certain, but I believe there is a major development being touted for Mayaguana. That might change the picture you've described.

The developnment calls for Mayaguana to be turned into a free port, like Freeport. That would really change the whole economics of the southern islands, no?

After reading the article you linked, my concerns for the development of Mayaguana has somewhat changed. The initiative to make Mayaguana a free port is a great idea! It would not only provide jobs for many, it will hopefully eliminate Mayaguana as being the “port” for drugs being shipped to the Bahamas from Cuba; or will it?

Yes! I think it will shore up the economic opportunites for all the Bahamas' southern (and sometimes forgotten) islands.

Actually, Jamaal, I enjoyed visiting my grandparents on Mayaguana as a child because it was different and quiet and serene. The very things that remote, luxury spa vacations are made of.
Yes, the basics are important. Running water and a sewer sytem are vital if the island is to experieince any growth.
Infrastructure and improvements are coming to Mayaguana. I hope that it will not be at the expense of the natural habitat.

The wife and I spent about a week in Mayaguana
last May. After the death of her parents she
need a nice quiet place for us to "get away"
from it all. We found that in Mayaguana. I
understand the need for improvements, but I
would hate to see the island change. Keep the
big resorts out. We have enough "tourist traps"
keep the island the way it is.
