Is Nassau a safe place for a single female to vacation by herself?

Yes! I think it is as safe as any vacation destination, anywhere, is - nowadays.

Which means one must use the same common sense and caution that they would in any new environment.

Like anywhere else in today's world, there are also some bad people in Nassau who prey on the unsuspecting and the naive. That is true anywhere, no matter where you go, even to your local shopping mall.

I think Nassau it is VERY safe for a single female, as long as she doesn't: go off into unchartered areas alone or with strangers; get sloppy drunk with people she does not know; accept drinks from strangers (could have date rape drug in them), or do other foolish things that one would not even do in their own hometown, let alone in a foreign country.

I say all this as Spring Break approaches and hordes of teens come to the Bahamas thinking this is some kind of a "crimeless" society where they can dress half-naked, get totally wasted with strangers and expect nothing bad to happen.

The US Embassy publishes a similar warning every year around this time. They will most likely do so again this year.

Don't go alone. Governor Bush just went there to talk about crimes on tourists, read it online here. Not all tourists are young spring breakers and alot of older tourists have been victimized. The people committing crimes are watching for the perfect prey. If you have to be onguard 24-7 on vacation, what vacation is it really? Do not go alone please listen.

I have to agree with Admin. Traveling alone in Nassau is fine, as long as you stay in the tourist areas and be moderately cautious. As for JEB, he should have stayed at home and worried about crime against tourists (and bahamians) in his own back yard. (he sure looked like HE was having a good time while here)

I travel alone to Nassau at least 2x a year. Never had a problem and never felt more ONGUARD than in my own neighborhood.

We will be staying in downtown Nassau next week. Is this a mistake? We're not one to flash money or jewelry - not that we have much to flash to begin with but that's not the point. :) I'm being advised by family that it's very unsafe to stay in downtown Nassau...are they just being paranoid or are we making a very foolish decision?

My daughter is planning her senior trip and of course all of her friends want to go to the Bahamas.

What Island is the safest place for them to stay?

I am also looking for good details about how we can save a little money along the way. I don't want her staying in the slums, but I also don't want to get ripped off by a travel agent who wants them to stay in a 5 star hotel.

Something nice and safe would be nice. Also what is some decent airlines to fly to the Bahamas. I am keeping her head out of the clouds. This is her senior trip - not her honeymoon - I am trying to get her to understand we must look at costs of all of this.

But, I do want her to go if I am happy with a safe place, and decent rates.

I wish I could go myself!!! LOL Maybe I will go and she can stay home! :-)
