Both the areas of Freeport & Port Lucaya appear to be fine to me. We had a blast while there! This area was hit back to back by I "think" Hurricane Jean & Wilma. Some hotels & smaller businesses were still closed but, they are working on them. There is still a lot to see and do there yet. The Sheraton Hotel, Westin Resort, Dundee Bay Villas (over next to Xanadu on Bahamia Beach) and the Casino area appear to be fine and are all open & appear to be doing good. They have all had their share of repairs done. As well as, others in and around Freeport. A few of the stores in the International Bazar were closed until further notice but, many are open. The stores and places within Port Lucaya appear to be doing well. The place appears to be getting back on their feet and the areas that I toured looked GREAT to me. The damage spoken of with the trees and things I did not see due to possible regrowth. Xanadu Resort & Hotel area apparently was hardest hit. There was still some debris (small pieces of glass) on the beach there but, all in all, I would certainly GO THERE and not be worried. The Xanadu hotel didn't look bad to me when we were there and I was inside of the place. I suppose it depends on your standards. They have a few floors in Xanadu Resort though that were not open yet though. I personally would NOT buy a time share from them though or let them talk me into a tour. I've heard they won't let you get away easily! The people are thriving and doing the best they can in Freeport areas. I personally, would rather be there than in Nassau but, that is MY CHOICE. Freeport is more laid back than Nassau but, just as inviting. I would certainly go back to Freeport to vacation ANYTIME!!! --- Go to Freeport, you have no worries. I wish I were still there but, back to the "real world".

A few more things ... We found out the reason why Xanadu Resort & Hotel is suffering so bad. This Hotel (once owned by billionaire aviator Howard Hughs and where he was found in hiding in the top floor suite) had "NO HURRICANE INSURANCE" at all. They are having to make the damage repairs & renovations on their own a little at a time now. Something to think about if you plan to buy a time share right now from them and a warning flag!!! Also, I was told it isn't worth the Rum and Free T-Shirts they offer you to listen to their LONG-LONG-LONG several hour sermon. They won't let you get away that easily and if you do get away, ... The free transportation they also offer you to get back to your hotel could take you HOURS of waiting-waiting-WAITING! They aren't in any hurry to get you back to your "other" hotel if you make them upset by taking their Rum & shirts and leaving them cold. I heard this first hand from someone who took the tour. ... Also, if you rent a car in the Bahamas remember, it's the LEFT side of the road you will be driving on and some rental vehicles do have the steering wheel on the right too. We did see a few people last week who forgot this all important fact while driving... OUCH!!!!

Hahaha -----yeah, I got suckered into sitting through thier time share deal.....you are definately right, they were VERY PUSHY, but the lunch was tastey, and the free rum was good. The shirts suck, but they did make for good floor towels at my "other" resort i was staying at (in which we waited about an hour and a half to get back to after the time share meeting was over.)

By the way, there is no way I would have bought time share w/ xanadu the day I went, the placed looked (sorry to say) run down (do to all the hurricane damage.

I'm sure back in the day, it was probably a prety sweet place, but not lately.

We're planning a family celebration and are looking at renting a villa in Freeport near Our Lucaya. Looks like we're targeting the first week in March 2007 and wondered what the water and weather was like at that time of year. Did anyone do a "swim with the dolphins" or snorkeling trip while there? We've got 2 young children with us and wondered whether we'd need to have the pool at the villa heated. Any comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
