Doongalik is extremely pleased to announce its new rebranded Gallery space and we invite you to visit to experience the transformation that was completed this month to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of our founder, the late Jackson Burnside III.
The Gallery now features the varied artworks of the talented Burnside who, as a highly trained architect and artist, was also a junkanoo, designer, and innovator who was forever creating. He also tried his hand at puppetry, mobiles, wood carving, wood cuts, fashion, and much more!
We still offer a selection of Bahamian books and videos, exclusive ceramics, woodwork and sculptures for sale, and the premises will still be available for rental.
As stated last month, the Gallery has been ‘renewed’ and the change has really brightened the space and added a sense of excitement!
In addition, we were very pleased to open the Jackson Logan Burnside III Design Library and Research Centre on the premises, that is still very much a work in progress! Donors were invited to tour the premises during this anniversary month and were suitably impressed at the transformation of the space.
The Library catalogue presently numbers almost 1,000 items relating to architecture, art, design, junkanoo reference, and business, with many more items still to be added, such as magazine articles, Jackson’s various projects, speeches, many writings and musings, as well as years of ‘Junkanoo Talk’ conversations…..the journey continues!
The Library will be available for public use by appointment only at a later date.
We sincerely thank all of the many donors (you know who you are!) who have contributed to making the Library a reality, as well as those persons who have donated books. It has certainly been a lot of hard work over these many years to get to this point, but it is really a wonderful sense of accomplishment to know that Jackson’s precious books, papers, speeches, writings, artwork, recordings – i.e. his knowledge, wisdom, vision, and love for his country – will be accessible and used by the public to benefit them in significant ways, whilst firmly embedding his legacy for years to come!
MAKING IT HAPPEN
In addition to our kind donors, we also acknowledge the assistance of the following individuals who have contributed to making this special space happen:
A special Thank You to:
Antonius Roberts for granting permission to use your awesome sculptural portrait of Jackson as the official logo of the Library. May his legacy last as long as the strong native madeira wood you painted his portrait upon!
Arthol Gibson and Orchid Burnside, for all the tedious packing, toting, moving, organizing, clearing, and cleaning!
Tom Dickinson, for preparing the stacks with your expert carpentry skills!
Craft Cottage Lady Nadine Ramphal, for your beautiful hand painted signs that so creatively mark the space!
Penny Nottage, for being the professional Librarian that you are, and for being readily on hand for years during your spare time to ensure that the Library is up to standard!
It takes a village, and we were able to make it happen because of all of you! We are indeed very proud to have accomplished this fitting tribute to Jackson’s memory!
