On June 24, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken released the 24th annual Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP Report). For the ninth consecutive year The Commonwealth of The Bahamas maintained Tier 1 status. Tier 1 is the highest ranking and requires governments demonstrate appreciable progress each year in combating trafficking. The U.S. Embassy wishes to congratulate the Government of The Bahamas for fully meeting the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and maintaining its Tier 1 status. This year’s TIP report highlights The Bahamas’ efforts in investigating and prosecuting more suspected traffickers, identifying a male victim for the first time, continuing to provide support for foreign victims repatriated abroad, and carrying out multiple awareness raising activities including prevention efforts targeting vulnerable underserved communities.

The U.S. government’s approach to combating human trafficking is consistent with the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, and the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (commonly known as the “Palermo Protocol”). The goal of the TIP report is to stimulate action and create partnerships around the world in the fight against trafficking in persons. The report also highlights strategies to address this crime and protect the victims. This year’s report features narratives for 188 countries and territories, including the United States.

For all countries, including The Bahamas and United States, the TIP report also highlights ways to exceed the minimum standard for eliminating trafficking. This year, the TIP report noted The Bahamas government did not convict any traffickers, continued to identify few victims, and did not proactively screen for trafficking among some vulnerable communities.
