Less than six months after assuming office as Prime Minister and already Perry Christie is starting to show signs of the arrogance that got his predecessor in trouble..
Speaking out against those who may have issue with his choices for government appointments, Prime Minister Perry Christie slammed his detractors during an address at the National Heroes Day celebrations on Thursday in Rawson Square.
"I just want you to know when they talk to me about who I appoint, that I will not be dismayed or distracted by people who seem not to understand even the Bible and its commitment to forgiveness and redemption," he said.
Mr. Christie has apparently already forgotten that the very people he is referring to are the ones who voted him into power and can vote him out again.
We are to assume from his comments that there are many Bahamians who do not understand the Bible as well as Mr. Christie does.
The Prime Minister said that his government is a "second chance government" because he had been given a second chance.
He related how he was put out of the Government High School at the age of 13 and told by senior educators that he could not learn. He said that fortunately, his parents did not give up on him and he was presented with other opportunities.
"I was given a second chance, a third chance and the rest is history," he said.
The Prime Minister's pronouncements came on the heels of him saying that a National Cultural Commission would be appointed within the week. There has been public talk and criticism for the way in which Mr. Christie has been performing since taking office in May of this year. And rightfully so! Some have said that he has been too slow in making decisions and others have said that his appointments reflect the "old" Progressive Liberal Party.
"So long as you cannot show me that an appointment I have made will bring pencil rot or a lack of integrity to today's Bahamas. Show me that and I will change course," he said.
Clearly the appointments of Mr. George Smith, Daryll Rolle and Sydney Stubbs (just to name a few) lack the integrity Mr. Christie refers to, yet he does nothing but make lame excuses for his actions.
He continued to justify his statement implying that when his decisions are made they are thoroughly and carefully thought out.
"Don't tell me when I have done due diligence that I ought not to understand what redemption means and what forgiveness means. I am a second chance government because I was given a second chance," he said.
Mr. Christie said that he believed there were many Bahamians who if given a chance to perform certain duties, could succeed at them.
With this idiotic logic, perhaps "Ninety" Knowles should be given a "second chance" and made a Parlimentarian or a Senator.
Concluding his remarks to his critics, the Prime Minister said, "As long as I am Prime Minister, you take it to God.
Hmmm! Shades of Ingraham's arrogance, already?
