A magistrate ruled there is enough evidence to try a 17-year-old in the death of a Canadian tourist found in a shallow grave in the Caribbean country, authorities say.
The decision by Magistrate Crawford McKee on the island of Abaco yesterday concluded a preliminary inquiry into the killing, police said.
Marcia Rose McKenzie — a 35-year-old lab technician from North York — was discovered slain in August. Her body, found on Abaco Island, had multiple wounds to her head, neck and torso, police said.
Police charged the 17-year-old with the murder, but did not release his identity because he is minor.
Before making his decision, the magistrate heard testimony in hearings that began Thursday.
The magistrate ordered the case go to trial in the Supreme Court.
McKenzie arrived Aug. 16 on the northern Bahamian island just off the coast of Florida to attend a friend’s wedding and visit her Bahamian boyfriend. It was her fourth trip to the Caribbean island.
She was last seen walking along a beach the morning of Aug. 17, police said. Authorities found her body Aug. 19.
