The lifestyles of the rich and famous are not supposed to include armed robberies.
In the wake of a robbery at Manitoba-born fashion mogul Peter Nygard’s sprawling compound in the Bahamas, though, neighbours in the gated community of Lyford Cay are reportedly worried their mansions could be next.
“They have to be concerned,” said a source familiar with the Lyford Cay social scene. “If three masked guys can rob the most prominent home in Lyford Cay, people realize it could easily happen to them, too.”
Nygard, the owner of Toronto-based Nygard International, was robbed on Dec. 11 by three masked bandits who invaded the home. They said the thieves eluded both Lyford Cay security and Nygard’s personal five-man staff by leaping a barbed-wire fence and jumping into the sea with an undisclosed amount of cash stuffed in their pockets.
Nygard has been told by police that arrests could be made in the next few days, a spokesperson for the fashion icon said yesterday. Police would not comment on the case when reached yesterday by The Sun.
The theft has sent fear through the exclusive community, whose residents include actor Sean Connery, novelist Arthur Hailey, and billionaire businessman Joe Lewis. Residents told the Nassau Tribune they are concerned about their safety.
“We are supposed to have a superior canine unit here,” one resident told the paper. “Where were they?”
