Three men have been arrested in connection with the third murder on Grand Bahama last evening.
Dead is 30-year-old Donahue Ferguson of Arden Forest, Grand Bahama. The victim, who just celebrated his birthday five days ago, was found lying through Yorkshire Street with a laceration to his upper arm, police said.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police and officer in charge of Grand Bahama and the Northern Bahamas, Ellison Greenslade, the men – two ages 25 and the other, age 28 – were arrested during the early morning hours.
Officer Greenslade said the men are expected to be charged with murder tomorrow.
Police reports state that there was a dispute at a residence on Yorkshire Street, where it was alleged that two men were attacking someone. As a result, police officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of a dark male, lying in the street. He was about 500 yards north of a house in that area, police said.
Medical officer pronounced Mr. Ferguson dead on the scene.
Police have set up an incident room at the Criminal Investigation Department as a part of the investigations of the three murders in Grand Bahama.
A team of fourteen detectives has been assigned to investigate the murders of Franz Guerrier, 39, prominent businessman Arne Petersen and the most recent murder.
“In the incident room, we have set up distinct telephone lines and [they] will be manned for 24 hours. Whatever leads we receive, we will sink our teeth into them,” Mr. Greenslade said.
Questioned as to whether he is alarmed over three murders in the nation’s second city, within an eleven-day period, Mr. Greenslade said, “absolutely not.”
“Let me qualify that. Every single murder, rape, armed robbery, any crime for that matter, that is reported, is of concern for us. But alarm is a totally different issue. We have had a very quiet period here in Grand Bahama, all in December, all of January and it is unfortunate that February has a new complexion as in we have recorded three murders,” he said.
Mr. Greenslade said the police are following significant leads in investigations of the first two murders on that island.
“I do not wish to compromise those investigations, but I can assure you that we are making progress in all three murders. All of our command staff, including myself, we are on the beat. We are on the street working. We take these things very seriously and we are spearing no efforts in assuring our public that this place is still safe and secure,” he said.
Ferguson’s death brings the country’s murder count to eleven.
