Jet ski operators have been warned that the authorities are cracking down on unlicensed vessels.
The Port Department and the Paradise Island Police Force seized several people found operating without proper registration or documentation on the weekend.
Port Department Assistant Controller Brent Williamson and Basil Dean and Assistant Superintendent Ellsworth Moss headed the operation, which they said has the full cooperation of the Royal Bahamas Police and Defence Force and all hotels within The Bahamas.
“The Port Department and Ministry of Transport are committed to protecting the marine environment and preserving the tourist product through effective enforcement of the provisions of the statutory acts of Parliament,” a statement issued Tuesday said.
The New Providence Port Authority board chairman Hope Strachan has promised to exercise a “no tolerance” attitude towards vessels and other watercrafts that do no adhere to the law.
Once seized, the jet skis were taken from the beach officials and stored at the port’s warehouse facilities at Potter’s Cay dock.
Port Department Controller Captain Anthony Allens said the department will ensure all watercraft are registered.
“The department will continue its effort to ensure that vessels are registered and documented in accordance with the Boat Registration Act and the Water skiing and Motor Boat Control Act.”
Owners can find their registration certificates suspended and/or revoked if sufficient evidence is brought against them.
