BaTelCo Trouble Blocks Soldiers Call From Iraq

Bahamian paratrooper Christopher Booth, part of the British combat force in Iraq, was looking forward to phoning home as he braced himself for war.

But when senior officers allowed him and his colleagues a few minutes each to contact their families, Christopher couldn’t get through because BaTelCo was having problems with their cellular phone links.

Instead, Christopher had to divert his message through his girlfriend in England, who had then made contact with his family via ordinary telephone.

While many Bahamians watch the Iraq conflict from the other side of the world, Private Booth is defending Iraq oil fields.
