Opposition Returns To The House Today

The Opposition will return to the House of Assembly today, despite not getting all Junkanoo documents requested, said the FNM House Leader Alvin Smith, Tuesday.

Mr. Smith, Lucaya MP Neko Grant and Eight Mile Rock MP Lindy Russell, stormed out of the House of Assembly last Wednesday after the government refused to provide them with the requested information.

Mr. Smith said that the Opposition has agreed to return to the House, even though they have only received the cover note of insurance coverage for the bleachers, copies of checks paid to Tower (the Canadian company that provided the bleachers), and a list of the complimentary tickets issued.

He stated however, that there is much more information that have been requested, that they will continue to press the government.

The walk out later led to a press conference held by the Opposition, in which Mr. Smith blamed the government for “concealing” information from the official Opposition, which represent the Bahamian public. He also added that it was “silly” for the government to debate a resolution “congratulating Minister Wisdom for wasting $1.18 million.”

Member of Parliament for Montagu, Brent Symonette, pointed out at the time, that the FNM’s decision to walk out of the House of Assembly had nothing to do with “lack” of support for the Junkanoo parade.

“We fully support the national pastime, but what we are addressing is the issue by which the Minister may have breached the laws of The Bahamas and acted improperly,” he said.

Today, the government is expected to entertain all questions from the Opposition, relating to the recently tabled Junkanoo report and the 2002-2003 Junkanoo parades.
