The Bahamas Electric Corporation (BEC) will announce a tariff restructuring and introduce new cost saving measures within two weeks, a source at the corporation told The Tribune yesterday.
Faced with mounting criticism from both the public and private sectors over escalating electricity costs and service reliability, Al Jarrett, BEC’s chairman, would neither confirm nor deny that the corporation was undergoing any pricing reassessment, but said it had not ruled out that option.
He added that it would be premature to address the concerns raised by the Bahamas Hotel Association which included requests that BEC reduce the electricity demand charge for resorts and develop a “stand-by generator rate” to help the sector reduce costs and increase its competitiveness against other destinations in this region.
Mr. Jarrett confirmed though, that BEC executives were expected to begin comprehensive discussions with the BHA to address the impact of the electricity costs on the industry that is this nation’s largest private sector employer, and what the corporation could do to alleviate some of the burden.
