Jitney drivers yesterday threatened to park their buses if police continue to target them “like criminals.”
At a press conference yesterday Nicholas Jacques, president of the Bahamas Omnibus Owners Association, complained that jitney drivers are being harassed, and ticketed for situations beyond their control.
Police have ticketed more than 100 drivers this month. The month of May was set aside by traffic officers to focus on offences committed by jitney drivers.
“The government has not put the proper infrastructure in place. Yet we have to suffer for it,” said Jacques.
“We are quite aware that the government is in financial trouble, and is using every avenue possible to generate revenue for the public treasury and since bus drivers are the most vulnerable people in the country who can’t get any public sympathy, we are therefore, used as scapegoats,” he said
