PM Faces Pay Revolt

Public servants are in revolt over government’s decision not to give them promised salary increases.

Bahamas Public Service Union president John Pinder told The tribune yesterday that union executives will meet with members on June 3rd to determine if industrial action is necessary.

During his budget communication from the House of Assembly on Wednesday, Prime Minister Perry Christie said government workers will not get the promised pay increases because the country cannot afford to do so without raising taxes – something the government is not prepared to do.

Mr. Pinder says the union does not buy that story.

“Mr. Christie wants to try and paint a picture of a gloomy economy so that thecivil service looks unreasonable when we ask for a raise because it looks like we do not care if the private sector has an increase in taxes.”

To fulfill the obligations of the five-year contract theļ¾ government would have to pay government employees $24 million.
