Government workers will not get the pay increases promised for July because the country cannot afford to pay more without raising taxes Ptime Minister Perry Christie announced yesterday.
During his budget commication from the House of Assembly, Mr. Christie said the government made the decision reluctantly, but there was little altenative.
The Prime Minister said increasing taxes would be difficult becasue it would mean asking Bahamians who have sacrificed during the last few years to pay higher taxes so that people who were exempt from such sacrifices could earn more money.
In the 2003/2004 budget there are no major tax increases, only “modest increases in a small number of fees,” Mr Chrsitie said.
