According to recent reports the United States has earmarked $11 million in aid for the Caribbean region to take part in future FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) negotiations and other international agreements.
Dr Roy Austin, United States Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago said the aid represents the US government’s recognition that the small island states in the region will lack the resources to fully take part in negotiations and may consequently forgo any benefits the FTAA will bring.
The two year project is being funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Additional aims of the project are to build trade negotiating capacity and improve regional competitiveness.
