$10 Million in Cocaine Found in Freeport

DEU and DEA officers made the discovery around 4:30pm Tuesday after searching a suspicious 20-foot container from Colombia, police reported yesterday.

The 1,116 pounds of cocaine were contained in nine "very large" duffel bags, according to a police report.

The container arrived in The Bahamas on Sunday, August 3, aboard MSC Jasmine inbound from Bueno Venturo, Columbia, and was awaiting transhipment to Antwerp, Belgium, police said.

The "dangerous" drugs were transported to New Providence aboard an OPBAT (Operation Bahamas and Turks and Caicos) helicopter.

A joint investigation involving the DEU, DEA and Interpol has been launched into the matter.

This marks the third reported major drug find at the container Port since the PLP resumed office in May, 2002.
