NASSAU, Bahamas — The captain of a ferry boat that collided with a cargo ship said he didn’t see the ship in the dark until it slammed into his port side. Four people were killed and at least 25 injured.
Ferry captain and owner Allen Russell said Sunday that he saw no navigational lights and there was nothing he could have done to avoid Saturday’s crash.

“I didn’t see him,” Russell said. “He had no running lights, no navigational lights visible.”
The 98-foot Sea Hauler ferry had been carrying 194 passengers and seven crew members when it left the Bahamas’ capital of Nassau in calm waters Friday night, officials said.
It collided about 1 a.m. EST Saturday with The United Star, a 178-foot cargo ship carrying some 11 people, cars and cargo.
The cargo ship captain couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
