"The laws of The Bahamas are very clear as they are now," said Mr. Christie. This is the first time the Prime Minister has spoken publicly on the controversial issue that has strong support by the Rainbow Alliance of The Bahamas (RAB), a gay rights movement and other pro-gay groups.
In the past several weeks, many secular and religious leaders have expressed strong objections to the Alliance's stand on gay and lesbian rights.
Bishop Samuel Green, president of the Bahamas Christian Council, has vowed to continue to protest same-sex unions. He believes it is against God's law, and contributes to the destruction of the family and country.
In it's cry for equal rights for homosexuals, bisexuals, and persons of transgender, RAB is lobbying for changes to be made to the Bahamas Constitution that gender and sexual orientation be included in the list of those who will not be discriminated against.
