The Department of Public Health warned Thursday that a “suspected case” is under investigation and said it is stepping up “surveillance” activities.
Dr. Carey told The Guardian newspaper that the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia had alerted the Ministry of Health about an elderly male visitor from the United States.
“We have done significant investigation on the matter and are in constant communication with the CDC but the case is not yet confirmed,” Dr. Carey said.
The warning in this country came the same day Americans were told incidents of the infection have tripled in the US within a week.
The virus is a seasonal infection transmitted by mosquitoes, but a case has never been confirmed in The Bahamas, according to the chief medical officer.
