The Bahamas Electrical Workers’ Union and its consultants have been negotiating with BEC for almost four months for a new agreement. The union claims that the corporation is not negotiating in good faith.
The union is pushing for what they have termed “moderate pay reises” and are attempting to reverse what is being called the refusal of management to raise the benefits of the current pension scheme.
BEC General Manager Bradley Roberts, said management had planned to end negotiations as soon as possible.
He said the corporation is taking the threat of a strike very seriously as it does not want anything to affect its operations.
Union spokesperson Mr. Williams said the union does not want to see a test of wills because of how detrimental a Christmas strike would be to the economy and to the country.
“But on the other hand we cannot sit back and allow any entity or group of persons to hold the union hostage by saying take it or leave it.”
