He believed that tha US should find it equally embarrassing as the Bahamas that “our head of state and her entourage were subjected to a thorough search at the Miami International Airport.”
Governor General Dame Ivy Dumont travelling with her husband, Reginald Dumont and her aidde-de-campe were searched on October 5 as they stopped in Miami on their way to the Caribbean.
An official protest was lodged with US Secretary of Sate Colin Powell.
Mr. Mitchell said, “Apparently that government’s protocol needs to be amended as they do not recognise the Governor General of a country as the head of state.”
Mr. Mitchell claimed that different countries hold varying regard for persons of authority. Some countries do not associate certain titles with prominence and importance.”
It was reported that on Tuesday evening, US Embassy chief of political, economic and public affairs Robert Kerr personally contacted Mr. Mitchell and expressed regret at what had happened.
