At a press conference of the Ministry of Health yesterday, Public Health Director Dr. Baldwin Carey said the West Nile Virus has been identified in a dead bird in New Providencs.
he cautioned the public not to handle dead birds, but to call the Ministry of Agriculture and the report the death.
In addition there have been a number os suspected cases of dengue fever reported on New Providence, however, epidermiologist Dr. Mohammed Imana said that confirmation won’t be in before next week.
The Ministry of Health announced last Friday that two cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in the Bahamas. the surveillance unit of the department of public health is now reviewing all flu-like illnesses reported within the last six weeks to determine if those cases are also dengue fever.
The department is also continuing its fumigation programme to destroy adult mosquitos.
“The fumigation is being administered in the area of the known cases and is being extended in a mile diameter and continuing treatment in the wider area. Ultra low volume application will then continue throughout the whole island. What you are doing is taking a low amount of insecticides to kill adult mosquitos, said Andrew Thompson, Chief Health Inspector.
