Roadworks Carelessness Nearly Kills Driver

His $8,500 Avalon saloon was a write-off in the crash, which happened just after midnight yesterday.

“I could have been killed,” Mr. Ronald McCartney told The Tribune last night, “There was no light, no sign, no nothing – just a big trench in the road.”

Now Mr. McCartney, a 34 year-old accountant at Crystal Palace, is consulting with a lawyer with the intention of suing for damages. He also urged the police to take action.

Mr. McCartney said, “This was a dark area. There was not even a light on the lamp poles. There was nothing to warn about the roadworks. I was right on top of it before I saw it.”

“I understand I was not the first to run into it. Others had struck the roadworks earlier in the evening.”

He said workmen turned up to put lights on the roadworks after the crash.

The Tribune was on the scene withing minutes and tried to speak to the sub-contractors who had reportedly dug the hole on behalf of BaTelCo. But they would not comment.
