BEC chairman Al Jarett called the blackout "disturbing and unusual" and it had him concerned.
With no traffic lights working throughout the city, many main roads were clogged with slow moving traffic – and the situation got worse as night fell.
Although dsimissing speculations of sabotage, early investigations have still not determined the cause of the fault which occurred in a line between two of the island's main power stations.
Earlier yesterday morning Works Minister Bradley Roberts told The Tribune that the system went down island wide at 5:25am.
While not completely certain Minister Roberts said that yesterday's blackout wa caused by a transmission problem between the two major power stations.
BEC's general manager Bradley Roberts, at a press conference later Thursday, said the disturbance was caused by a fault on one of the 132kV lines between the Clifton Pier and Big Pond power stations.
Te fault caused the system to collapse and the generators, that were in operation at the time, to trip.
