Divers report that the oil stretches from about 100 feet off the Clifton Pier coast, south of BEC’s power plant, all the way down to Lyford Cay bay.
On Tuesday irate tourists resurfaced after a fabulous dive at the “James Bond wreck” covered in oil.
Captain Tony Duncombe of Dive, Dive, Dive said at about noon Tuesday he, along with three divemasters and 19 tourists, went on a deep sea dive. While enjoying their deep sea adventure, Captain Duncombe, the only one left on the boat, noticed the slick.
The current was pulling the aslick toward them, he said but he could not contact his colleagues to inform them of what was ahead.
Captain Duncombe was not only upset that his visitors were extremely disgruntled, but that the marine environment was at risk.
Oil is toxic to coral and other marine organisms. There are some extensive coral reefs in that area, heavily trafficked by the dive industry.
BEC’s Everette Rolle said they investigating the source and that they would make a report today regarding the matter.
