Hotel Strike Would ‘Gamble With Our Future’

This statement was made by the vice-president of the Bahamas Hotel Employers Association, Michael Reckley.

The association issued a statement yesterday in response to claims by the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union president Pat Bain that Sun International employees were ready and willing to enforce a strike vote should negotiations between the union and the employees reach a stalemate.

Mr. Reckley said, “Hotel occupancy for the vast majority of hotels is down, room rates are falling, profitability is nearly non-existent and the Bahamas is losing precious market share.”

“He said that at the same time costs are rising, competition is growing and shortened work weeks are increasing.

He said if the hotel sector cannot produce adequate financial returns and attract new investments, the problems all of us face will worsen.

“It is hard to follow the union’s logic that a work strike will somewhere provide relief to employees and provide a long-term remedy to our dangerous predicament.

Mr. Reckley noted that the association had always presented a thorough and reasonable package for employees.
