Hotels May Face Crisis

The government may be left to mount damage control in the tourism sector if union representatives stick to an alleged coordinated plot to cripple operations at local hotels to try to force the signing of an industrial agreement for over 200 middle managers and supervisors of the Radisson Cable Beach Resort.

According to an inside source, the action was planned for this weekend.

Union leaders had been trying to secure the support of their membership for a hotel sector wide withdrawal of labour this weekend, the Bahama Journal has been reliably informed.

But officials refused to go on the record on Friday.

Were such a widespread industrial action to happen, it could do irreparable harm to the hotel and tourism sector. It would coincide with one of the busiest weekends, that normally draws thousands of visiting tourists, looking for a cozy destination to spend Thanksgiving.

The President of the Bahamas Hotel Managerial Association Obie Ferguson had promised “dramatic action” at the beginning of the week because the collective bargaining agreement is at a stalled stage.

He had asked the affiliate unions of the Trade Union Congress, of which he is a president, to support the action
