There were alarming scenes outside the building in Petionville, Port-au-Prince, as about 600 demonstrators shook the iron gates declaring that the Bahamas was “too small” to solve Haiti’s problems.
During the melee, the Bahamas ambassador, Dr. Eugene Newry and his wife Francoise were left shaken as mobs rocked their SUV as they approached the embassy building.
The dermonstration came during a day of protests as up to 1,500 anti-Aristide protesters paraded through the streets of the Haitian capital calling for the president’s removal.
The protest’s outside the Bahamas embassy, which were thought to have been planned by parts of the Civil Society opposition group, were the first tangible sign of Haitian disquiet over CARICOM’s intervention in Haiti’s affairs.
