Mr. Comito has replaced Basil Smith, the former executive vice-president of the Bahamas Hotel Association, who has moved to the Ministry of Tourism.
The move, which had been widely known in the industry will see Mr. Comito assume his current post while continuing to manage staff at the Tourism and Development Board “during a transitional period”.
In a statement, both the BHA and the Tourism and Developement Board said they planned to work together in the coming months, and with other private sector organisations, to see how strategic and administrative alliances could improve their effectiveness.
In a joint staement, Jeremy MacVean, the BHA’s president and Normon Solomon, acting chairman of the Tourism and Development Board, said “The private sector can and must play a more active role in improving and developing our nation’s number one industry. We believe that by strengthening our respective organisations and building alliances, we will be better equipped to make a greater difference.”
Mr. Comito, who previously worked with the Chambers of Commerce in the US Virgin Islands and the Washington DC-based National Alliance of Business, will continue to direct the private sector’s efforts to transform the city of Nassau as a destination. The Tourism and Development Board will seek to hire a full-time senior manager to co-ordinate plans.
