Calvi, the former chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, was known as “God’s banker” because of his ties to the Vatican. He was found hanged under the bridge, across the River Thames, within days of leaving Italy while on bail, pending appeal on a corruption conviction that followed the collapse of his bank.
Italian investigators, who reopened the probe into Calvi’s death with City of London Police last year, said the money was probably being laundered for Colombian drug lords in Medellin, la
Repubblica said. It isn’t known whether the cash, traced through Miami, is still in The Bahamas, the paper said.
“It’s necessary that the authorities in The Bahamas give us a hand,” Luca Tescaroli, a prosecutor in Rome, told la Repubblica.
