FREEPORT ヨ They later learned the matters would begin Wednesday.
Cordell Darrell Farrington, 35, was due in court Tuesday morning for what was to have been the first day of inquiries into the murder cases of
13-year-old DeAngelo McKenzie and 14-year-old Desmond Rolle ヨ two of five schoolboys whose names were thrust into the limelight last year after their disappearances over a six-month period.
Farrington is also alleged to have killed 12-year-old Mackinson Colas, 11-year-old Junior Reme, and 22-year-old Jamaal Robins, a friend.
Four juvenile boys were brought up on charges on Oct. 10, 2003 for the manslaughter of Jake Grant, 12, the first of the five schoolboys to go missing, who vanished on May 9. A summary trial into this matter is set for Thursday, Oct. 26.
Farrington was a no-show in Magistrate Court 3 during the morning session.
“He will not be here at this time,” Crown Prosecutor Inspector Wendell Clarke informed Magistrate Helen Jones.
The defendant is on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison, Fox Hill, in the capital and, according to the prosecutor, had not been brought down as yet due to “some difficulties.”
Mr. Clarke requested that the matter be stood down until after lunch and begin at 1:00 p.m., and Magistrate Jones obliged.
Attorney Romona Farquharson, of R. A. Farquharson and Co., informed the court that she was representing the defendant, much to the chagrin of the victims’ family members.
Some made derogatory remarks while leaving the courtroom and were quickly silenced by a police officer at the door.
Minutes after 1:00 p.m. family members grew more peeved after learning that the matter was set down until the next morning because the defendant had not arrived.
Charlene Smith, Desmond’s mother, vented her frustration in the courtyard for several minutes.
“Bring him,” she shouted. “Why leave him out. What’s the reason? Bring the murderer in, let him face the parents.”
Jake’s mother, Brigette Grant; Junior’s mother, Myrthi Jean-Tinord; DeAngelo’s grandmother, Marilyn Davis; and Jamaal’s parents, Patricia Scott and Edward Robins, were also present to lend moral support.
The PI into the alleged intentional killings of Jamaal, Mackinson and Junior is also scheduled to begin in Court 1 before Magistrate Franklyn Williams Wednesday.
