Stabbing And Shooting Mark Crime Weekend

A stabbing aboard a jitney left a teenager in hospital after an attack by a knife-wielding assailant on Saturday, according to police.

Derek Nottage was listed in serious condition in the Princess Margaret Hospital after receiving stab wounds, nearly six weeks after Commissioner of Police Paul Farquharson re-launched the campaign against knives.

Nottage, 17, was attacked when he refused to give up his cellular phone to would-be thieves, while riding a bus on route 21, police said.

Chief Superintendent Hulan Hanna told The Bahama Journal on Sunday that Nottage was on a bus in the Wulff Road and Collins Avenue area around 4 pm when a male he knew asked to see his cellular phone.

Nottage reportedly refused, resulting in the phone being snatched by another person accompanying the individual who had asked for the phone, Mr. Hanna said.

He added that when Nottage attempted to retrieve the phone, he was stabbed in the left shoulder by a dagger.

Commissioner Farquharson said earlier during a press briefing that knives are the choice weapons for committing many violent crimes, including murder.

Mr. Farquharson invited all persons to partner with the police by reporting those who they know are traveling with knives, cutlasses, machetes, daggers or any other weapons.

Five hours after the stabbing incident on Saturday, police said a shooting occurred at a party on Market Street near Robinson Road.

While at that party, Kashon Douglas reportedly got into an argument with another male. During that altercation, Douglas, 24, was shot multiple times about the body, according to police. He was on Sunday listed in serious condition at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Police said they are following significant leads in both matters.

In a separate incident, a couple was robbed Saturday night upon returning to their Seven Hills Estates home, police said.

Police reported that a masked gunman approached Tanya and Vernon Moller as they arrived at their home on Hill Crest Drive around 11 pm.

According to the couple, the man emerged from the bushes with a shotgun, as they exited their vehicle. He proceeded to rob them of money and personal items, they reported to police.

The robber, who was reportedly wearing a tam mask and was dressed in camouflage, escaped on foot.

Police said they are following some leads in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, investigations were continuing into pinpointing the owner of an anonymous box that was shipped onboard the Bohengy last week, carrying $60,000 worth of cocaine.

The brown box was sent to Nassau from Harbour Island onboard the ferry last Tuesday, according to police.

Officers reportedly found the unsigned box after acting on a tip.

A search of the vessel was conducted when it docked in Nassau Harbour around 6:30 p.m. Authorities said they found the box was found in the luggage compartment.
