2004 Tourism Could Break Records

Mr. Wilchcombe told The Tribune that this year, the projected target shows that New Providence alone could see as many as five million visitors to its shores. Grand Bahama, he said, is headed for over a million visitors.

“From 1985 to 1993, Grand Bahama was seeing about 1.6 million each year and then it dropped. Last year there was about 650,000 visitors, but this year we see that the amount of visitors in Grand Bahama could significantly increase,” he said.

In New Providence last year 4.5 million visitors arrived, three per cent up from 2002.

“Whilst we are talking record-breaking tourism arrivals this year we are still dealing with complaints, and among the complaints is the product,” Mr. Wilchcombe admitted.

“We have to diligently ensure that our product is at the highest level because we are no longer just competing with the Caribbean but with the world.”
