Family Islands Report High Occupancy Levels

On Friday tourism officials on the island reported that all of the other hotels are benefiting from the spin off of that resort.

Charity Ambrister senior manager of the tourism office in Exuma told the Bahama Journal that this trend in high occupancy is expected to last until the end of May.

Although this time of the year is considered as the peak season, Ms. Ambrister said that Exuma has a higher rate of bookings than normal.

Since January business at the hotels was doing extremely well, she said.

The hotel properties include The Emerald Bay Resort, Club Peace and Plenty, Peace and Plenty Beach Inn, Palm Bay Beach Resort, Coconut Cove and Two Turtles Inn.

Exuma is not the only island that is booming with high occupancy levels according to the Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe, Grand Bahama and San Salvador are also reporting a high occupancy level.

The increase in hotel rooms has brought additional flights to the island. A number of international air carriers such as Links, Continental Airlines, private flights and American Eagle have daily flights.

According to airport agent at the Exuma Airport, American Airlines alone has at least five flights a day.

ᅠMs. Ambrister stated that with the increase in development, unemployment is non-existent and that those persons who are out of work choose to be, as jobs are available to all and sundry.

Ms. Ambrister said a year or two ago activities on the island were limited but with the increase in development activities have reached an all time high.

Visitors can choose an assortment of activities ranging from cruises aboard the Thunder Ball Express- where tourist take tours to and from the Exuma Cays, snorkel or dive from the Aria Bella catamaran, half day trips, evening cruises on the Emerald Lady, ride the Exuma Glass Bottom boat among other activities.

Ms. Ambrister further stated with all of development and high occupancy levels at the hotels said persons who want to attend the family island regatta will no doubt find it difficult to find accommodations.
