The furor was caused by extreme remarks made by Mr. Moncur during a debate on Haiti – and particularly a moral slur he cast on Rev. Simeon Hall, who had called in to say the show had hit “a new low”.
Mr. Moncur also blasted a woman caller, claiming that as a foreigner she had no right to make her views known on a Bahamas radio station.
At the end of a fiery debate, during which Mr. Moncur was both praised and criticised by listeners, the Workers Party leader apologised to anyone who felt insulted by his remarks.
The controversy raged while the show, Love 97’s Issues of the Day, hosted by Mike Smith, was in progress. Several times, Mr. Smith had to restrain Mr. Moncur as his remarks became increasingly provocative.
Chief executive Mr. Jones intervened, berating Mr. Moncur off-air while commercials were being heard by listeners, after the political activist questioned Rev. Simeon Hall’s morality and told the woman caller – a permanent resident – that she had no right to comment on a Bahamas radio station.
He also told her to “keep her mouth” out of Bahamian affairs.
