Guana Cay Gets High Speed Wireless Internet

This will serve all of Guana Harbour, Fishers Bay and most of the main Guana settlement.

Once a sleepy fishing settlement and now under the keen scrutiny of upscale developers, Guana Cay is the third of Abaco’s offshore cays to be set up, with Man OWar and Elbow Cay now “up and running.”

Recently OII’s owners/operators Chris Claridge and Tara Hingle, two enterprising young Bahamians, extended their WiFi system (short for wireless fidelity) to Little Harbour in the south.

“We were sitting at Pete’s Pub having blasters (fruity tropical rum beverage) while we were on line,” smiled Tara who bought OII with Chris in December 2002 when it was simply a dial-up internet company.

Present coverage of the system , which employs “off the shelf equipment” to connect to the internet whenever in range of OII’s hot spot transmitters, includes Marsh Harbour, Boat Harbour, Man OWar, Hope Town, Great Cistern, Sugar Loaf, Eastern Shores, Matt Lowes Cay, Bahama Palm Shores, Cherokee Sound, Winding Bay, Little Harbour, Scotland Cay and now Guana Cay.

Ahead is wireless installation for White Sound, Lubbers Quarters, Green Turtle Cay,Spanish Cay, Leisure Lee and Treasure Cay.

“We hope to have all these operational within the next couple of months. This will enable cruisers to connect from Green Turtle Cay south to Little Harbour,” enthused Chris who is seen more often these days up a ladder or balancing on a tower than on terra firma.
