Police Give Warning To Haitian Community

Police have issued a warning to all Haitians living in New Providence to be extra vigilant and to take care if walking alone in the streets.

The stark warning follows the murder of a Haitian man outside his home and the shooting of another on Tuesday morning in the East Street area.

Police spokesman Chief Supt. Hulan Hanna said yesterday that Haitians are often targeted as the victims of crimes and are “seen as easy prey.”

The police chief said perpetrators choose Haitians because they believe the incidents would not be reported to the police and the crimes would not be investigated.

“And this is true. Many Haitians do not report crimes because of their shaky immigration status,” Supt. Hulan Hanna said.
