She and security aide Sgt. Michelet Meronard, who was also hit by gunfire, “provided rebel forces with two good targets”, according to outspoken Rodney Moncur, leader of the Worker’s party.
He alleged that Mrs. Newry is a cousin of the deposed Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide and that Sgt. Meronard is the son of a refugee who fled Haiti during the Duvalier regime.
Therefore, said Mr. Moncur, both were viewed as targets by Haiti’s interim rebel government, which took over when Aristide was forced out of the country some weeks ago.
