Over Flowing Sewer Sparks Public Health Concern

Excrement and toilet tissue have been erupting from a hole in the car park for several days. Owner Mr Will Bethel, owner of Appraisal Services, said: “Everyone is very concerned about it.” Vehicles moving through the car park from East Bay Street onto Mackey Street are spreading the sewage into nearby streets. And pedestrians are walking through it accidentally, carrying it around on their shoes. “We have called the public health department but so far to no avail,” said one businessman who did not wish to be named.

“It is believed a septic tank might have overloaded and burst. The smell is unbelievable.”

There is special concern because of the number of restaurants in the area. “This could cause people to stay away from certain eateries. It must be dealt with quickly,” said one resident living nearby.

Employees at nearby businesses park in the affected lot. It is feared they are trailing germs into offices and shops.

“This has been going on for days,” said the resident, “Why is nothing being done?”

Pipes Yesterday, the Water and Sewerage Corporation said the problem was caused by a build-up of grease in underground pipes. This created a back-up.

Two restaurants have now been advised to clean out their grease filtering and disposal systems. This was the only way of eliminating the problem, a spokesman said.
