Minister Hits Back at Freeport Gov’t Anarchy Claims

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Local Government Alfred Gray yesterday swiftly responded to Freeport’s Chief Councillor Marva Moxey’s accusation that the Freeport government was in a state of anarchy by declaring that “local government in the Bahamas is not failing and is in fact improving every day.”

Ms. Moxey had called a special press conference on Sunday stating that “the local government process in Freeport is under serious threat,” and announced that she was taking the matter to the Supreme Court.

The Chief Councillor called on Prime Minister Perry Christie to intervene in a dispute in Freeport which she said “threatens the very core of local government in the Bahamas and the prime minister’s own vision for the constitution.”

Ms. Moxey claimed that five members of the Freeport City Council had established a second council of their own and accused them of orchestrating a ‘silent coup’ in the country’s second city.

She further accused Local Government Minister Alfred Gray f condoning their actions by refusing to intervene in the matter.

The Local Government minister said this was a fallacy.
