Chief Superintendent Marvin Dames, head of the Central Detective Unit, said, “officers have to use whatever force is necessary to defend themselves.”
His comments follow the latest shooting death of 21-year-old Lincoln Forbes on June 3.
“Some officers had to defend themselves and some will have to face the music.”
He said one reason for the increase in crime is related to gun trafficking into the country.
Supt. Dames explained that officers are being sent abroad and trained in the latest technology and coming home to train others.
The training programme at the Police College is also being redesigned to reflect the changes in the 21st century.
