Alarm At Gay Cruise TV Coverage

A documentary team will accompany the gay cruise that comes to the Bahamas next week, to the alarm of local campaigners who oppose the cruise.

A film crew from the US TV network HBO joined Gregg Kaminsky of R Family Vacations, the company operating the cruise, on a visit to the Bahamas this week. They filmed a breakfast meeting between Mr Kaminsky and Pastors Mario Moxey and Vaughn Miller of the “Save the Bahamas” campaign, at the Bahamas Harvest Church.

Pastor Moxey told The Tribune: “We are very concerned about showcasing the Bahamas as a playground for gays and lesbians.”

The cruise, billed as “the first ever gay and lesbian family cruise” is due to stop at Great Stirrup Cay in the Berry Islands on July 15 and in Nassau on July 16. It is taking place aboard the Norwegian Dawn, and organisers hope to fill all 2,200 places. It is financially backed by the American comedienne and actress Rosie O’Donnell, who earlier this year marrier her long time partner Kelli Carpenter in San Francisco. Ms Carpenter runs R Family Vacations with Mr Kaminsky.

“Save the Bahamas” will be holding a protest against the coming of the cruise on Sunday at 5pm in Rawson Square. There will be a second protest on Friday morning, when the ship arrives in Nassau, also in Rawson Square. Pastor Moxey said that the protest is directed at the governmenty and not at the cruise passengers, and that there will be no attempt to confront them.

Mr Kaminsky told The Tribune: “I’m not asking them to welcome us into their chruch, just to let us spend money in their stores.”
