Sea Tragedy Vessels ‘At Fault’

Evidence submitted to the Wreck Commission shows that the my Sea Hunter and the my United Star were both at fault in the August 2 collision at sea in which four people died and 25 were injured.

This was the conclusion of the closing submissions on behalf of counsel for the Minister of Transport and Aviation, which was released to The Tribune yesterday.

The report also states that the Master of both vessels can be said to be ”seriously negligent in the discharge of their duties.”

The captain and helmsman on the my United Star first sighted the my Sea Hauler approximately eight miles out. Under these circumstances counsel for the Minister of Transport and Aviation believed the subsequent collision should never have occurred.

The 128-page report concludes that the ”complete failure of the owners and masters to properly observe the prescribed law… was direct cause of the collision and amounts to the misconducy and incompetence contemplated by section 224(1) of the Merchant Shipping Act.”
